For many people, the major and sudden changes to the rules around renting property have been among the most significant to result from the coronavirus pandemic and have prompted numerous questions.

The government recently produced a guidance document aimed at both landlords and tenants in the private and social rental sector, which answers dozens of the most common questions that people have about the implications of the Coronavirus Act 2020.

It includes guidance on landlords’ health and safety obligations, the protections for tenants that have been in force since March 26, as well as maintaining rent and mortgage payments.

The document makes it quite clear that it contains ‘non-statutory guidance’ about the recent changes in the law which may be subject to further update, but it offers a wealth of information in an easily accessible form.

As always, ARAG policyholders who are dealing with a specific legal problem are encouraged to contact the legal advice helpline, as detailed in your policy documentation.
