Quick fire questions

What does your role at ARAG involve?

Put simply, I am responsible for the management and development of a portfolio of existing and prospective ARAG clients in the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  This entails a combination of administration, customer relationship management, hard & soft sales and technical insurance work.

Briefly outline your career history...
It's a bit like John Major (who famously ran away from the circus to become an accountant) except that I started my working life as a trainee Chartered Accountant before moving into insurance.  Over the last twenty-one years (and several months) I have worked for both Insurance Companies and Insurance Brokers in a variety of roles, including lengthy periods at Willis Corroon, Ennia/Aegon Insurance and Alexander & Alexander/Aon Risk Services.  Whilst at Willis, I completed my A.C.I.I. and then whilst at Aon, I completed my A.I.R.M.  2010 saw me move into the legal expenses insurance arena and I joined ARAG at the end of October, 2013.

What opportunities will you be exploring over the next 12 months?
There are many opportunities. The insurance industry has gone through unpredicted changes over the last four or five years. Insurance providers have closed offices and are closing small agencies to achieve economies of scale and to reduce overheads. Both traditional High Street brokers and local commercial brokers have been closing, consolidating and selling out to address this and the increasing costs of regulation. A whole new sector of internet, MGA, niche and specialist providers have sprung up.

Changes within the communications, education, entertainment, health, legal, regulatory, sports and technology sectors present new challenges and exposures. As new and surviving brokers, insurers and other providers move and expand into these sectors considerable opportunities are arising for new and innovative risk solutions. At ARAG we have the expertise, experience and flexibility to respond to these, adding value and mitigating uncertainty.

If you could give one piece of advice to brokers it would be...
Be more creative; more innovative. Don't simply accept the status quo.

If you were stranded on a desert island what three items would you want with you?
A longwave radio with an unlimited supply of batteries, a copy of The Complete Winnie The Pooh Stories and a football.

If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
I have opted for Albert Einstein: A man who, by the age of 23 had greatly increased our understanding of the nature and behaviour of light and promulgated his Special Theory of Relativity. Despite his great genius, he remained a very humble and human character, a thoroughly entertaining, humorous and witty person and an eccentric. I think a dinner party or even a night at my local with Einstein would be a hoot!

My role as Broker Account Manager (BTE) involves liaising with existing clients in the City of London to deliver a first class service in support of their legal expenses and assistance requirements. In addition to this I am also focused on working with new clients to fully understand their legal expenses/assistance needs.

Briefly outline your career history...

What opportunities will you be exploring over the next 12 months?
Focus on further growth within the market and the identification of new clients to work in partnership with.

If you could give one piece of advice to brokers it would be...
I have the utmost respect for the broker market and the challenges and opportunities they face. Legal expenses and assistance products can play an important role in helping brokers build even stronger relationships with their clients by adding additional value, so my advice to them would be to talk to us about their current and future books of business.

If you were stranded on a desert island what three items would you want with you?
Great question! I’d take a fishing rod, duct tape and a plastic tarpaulin… in reality I wanted to say ‘boat, never ending pint of Guinness and a genie in a bottle’ but I guess you can’t have everything!

If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
King Leonidas – as he demonstrated that if something is important in life that you don’t surrender and retreat, no matter what the consequences are.
